One more cup of water please- Tips on drinking more water and keeping hydrated
If you want to live your best life, feel great and look great staying hydrated is key.
Water makes up around 60 percent of our body weight and 90 percent of our brain weight hence it should come as no surprise that drinking plenty of water is essential.
Water boosts our energy, detoxifies, aids in keeping a healthy weight, aids in digestion and hydrates our skin (Yes drinking plenty of water is one of the best and cheapest anti-wrinkle preventative measures)
Heath experts recommend that we drink about 2-3 litres of water a day. According to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) it is recommended to drink around 9 cups ( A little over 2 litres) for women a day and 13 cups (Around 3 litres for men)
Most of us are aware of the importance of staying hydrated , however drinking plenty of water is easier said than done so here are 5 tips which have helped me to make sure I drink plenty of water of the daily.
First thing in the morning
Make it a habit to have a glass of water right after you wake up giving you a hydrated start into the day. Having water first thing in the morning boosts your metabolism and increases your energy levels. Drinking water increases your red blood cell count as well as creating an increase of oxygen in our body making us feel more awake and alert.
Add some flavour
For some drinking plenty of water can be a challenge because of it’s plain taste, I believe this is especially the case for people who are into drinking soda and other flavoured beverages. There are healthy ways of adding a bit of taste to your glass of water, such as squeezing a bit of fresh lemon juice into your glass(one of my all-time favourites) or adding some cucumber slices for a super fresh taste. Perhaps even adding a bit of ginger (ginger&lime is a delicious combo I believe) for those of you who enjoy a more potent taste.
Set a water alarm
It may sound silly but it actually works. As many of us have busy lives and schedules one of our biggest obstacles in not staying hydrated comes down to simply forgetting to drink water throughout the day. Set yourself a water drinking alarm for every 2 hours throughout the day until evening and have a glass of water every time it goes off- This way you’ll easily get in your 8-9 cups of water a day.
Bring a bottle with you
Have a reusable bottle of water on you at all times during the day, this way you’ll be more inclined to stay hydrated without having to buy any water and you can refill it whenever needed. If you have to go out of your way to get a glass of water while on the go or at work meeting your daily water intake goals will be much harder.
Make it sparkling
If you are having a rough day and are really not in the mood for another plain boring glass of water treat yourself to a nice bottle of sparkling mineral water. This is still better than giving into having a soda or drinking no water at all and gives you a bit of variation. I know sparkling water isn’t for everyone but I personally find it delicious especially when adding a bit of Lemon juice or fresh orange slices.
I hope these five tips for drinking more water are helpful and will get you more hydrated in no time! Also drinking more water becomes a lot easier once you make a habit of it since your thirst level adjusts to the amount of water you drink on a daily basis hence you will naturally become more thirsty as you drink more and long for that extra cup of delicious cold water!
